Welcome to Sugar Creek Dairy! We’re a dairy operation with all registered holstein cattle. We have approximately 570 milking cows and 600 youngstock. In addition to the Holstein herd, we operate 230 acres of custom crops. Our operations span two locations—one for milking cows and one for heifers.
We’re hiring an Assistant Herdperson to join our team in Elkhorn, WI (about 45 miles southwest of Milwaukee). In this role you will play a key role in supporting daily herd management and livestock care on a progressive dairy farm. This position works closely with the Herd Manager to promote herd health, productivity, and overall success within the operation.
With a team of 12-16 employees, our goal is to produce high-quality milk through exceptional animal care, quality feed, and good stockmanship. Responsibilities:
- Assist in all areas of dairy herd health management, including observation, treatment, and prevention protocols.
- Monitor fresh cows and hospital cows daily, administer treatments as directed, and accurately record health events.
- Vaccinate livestock according to herd health schedules and assist with preventative health programs.
- Sort, move, and group dairy cattle appropriately based on production stage, health status, and breeding needs.
- Support calving operations, including monitoring close up cows and assisting during the calving process when necessary.
- Enter and maintain accurate herd data in DairyComp or similar dairy management software.
- Assist with breeding activities including heat detection and artificial insemination, training provided if needed.
- Work collaboratively with the farm team to maintain a clean, organized, and efficient dairy and livestock operation.
Requirements:
- Prior experience working on a dairy farm with milking herd preferred.
- General knowledge of livestock handling, herd health, and agriculture practices.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
- Team oriented mindset with the ability to communicate effectively in a farm environment.
- Availability to work one weekend day as part of a rotating schedule.
