NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center (DREC) is seeking to fill a full-time, benefited Ag Research Technician position to work at the Center's ranch location near Manning, ND. Description & Details:
Position responsibilities:
1).
Care and handling of livestock which includes cattle and horses.
Tasks associated with this responsibility include but is not limited to the following:
- Establish routines and perform duties related to the care and safety of livestock on pasture or in pens.
- Prepare and distribute feed rations and mixes which would include feed grinding and hay chopping.
- Daily inspection of livestock to ensure there is an adequate water supply and to observe the health and well-being of all livestock.
- Maintain livestock records.
- Assist with appropriate veterinary procedures.
- Provide routine cattle checks during calving season which includes weighing and tagging newborn calves and maintaining calving records.
- Assist with cattle handling to obtain required research data.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned.
2).
General crop, farm and ranch work.
Tasks associated with this responsibility include but is not limited to the following:
- Must be able to operate various types of tractors and other agricultural equipment.
- Conduct various agronomic practices such as tillage, seeding, spraying, harvesting both feed and grain crops, mowing, raking, and baling hay crops.
- Weed control of grounds, hauling and stacking hay, hauling and storage of crops and the collection of hay, crop and soil samples.
- Transportation of livestock to and from various locations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
3).
General maintenance and repairs of ranch facilities, grounds and equipment.
Tasks associated with this responsibility include but is not limited to the following:
- Maintain and repair agricultural facilities, equipment, livestock shelters, feed and water troughs, barns, storage areas, fences, pens, corrals or any other livestock areas.
- Ability to use hand, power tools and welders to perform needed repairs or maintenance on equipment and facilities.
- Ability to assist with preparation of facilities for special events such as tours and Field Days.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
4.
Work safely.
- Maintain an organized and clean work environment with high work standards.
- Use proper safety guidelines for all equipment operations.
- Report any safety issues or concerns to ranch manager.
- Use personal protective gear.
- Filing of incident reports in the event of an incident or injury.
- C omplete required training in a timely manner
Work Schedule:
- 40 hours per week with normal working hours from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
- Overtime possible
- Weekend work rotation required for ranch chores
Hiring Range:
Compensation: $36,000-$48,000 + DOE
- Full time employee with benefits
Pay is based on several factors, including budget, labor market, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and/or certification and other business considerations.

- Possess a valid driver's license
- Experience with farm/ranch operations
- Knowledge and experience with care and handling of livestock
- Proficiency in maintenance and operation of various farm/agricultural machinery
- Experience in towing large livestock equipment
- Ability to work both as a team member and independently when necessary
- Conduct work in inclement weather
- Ability to use a computer
- Complete a background check
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in animal science or a similar degree
Core Competencies:
- Experience with farm/ranch operations.
- Knowledge and experience with care and handling of livestock
- Proficiency in maintenance and operation of various farm/agricultural machinery
- Experience in towing large livestock equipment
- Ability to work both as a team member and independently
- Conduct work in inclement weather
