Description of Work
The Barta Brothers Ranch is situated in the northeastern Sandhills region of Nebraska, approximately 20 miles south of Ainsworth, Long Pine, and Bassett, NE. It serves as a center for research and education, with primary focus areas including:
- Grazing management
- Range management and ecology
- Range livestock production
These programs aim to improve sustainable ranching practices and advance knowledge in grassland ecosystems and livestock systems.
As a Ranch Hand (On-Call), you will:
- Control invasive plant species through application of herbicides and/or mechanical removal methods.
- Assist with fence construction and repair.
- Operate and assist with maintaining university fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as an O/S On-Call Worker.

On-Call positions are hired to work during peak activity periods and may work up to 693 work hours per fiscal year. On-call employees are not eligible for any leave with pay or any other university benefits.

Minimum Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED plus one year of commercial or family agricultural experience. Equivalent experience/education considered.
- Must have valid driver's license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are preferred but not required:
- Bachelor's degree in range sciences, wildlife sciences, or other natural resources related topic.
- Prior experience operating vehicles off-road.
